Dragonfly Symposium Presented by Blue Sky!
Hosted by Metis Nation of Ontario
Ozhaawashko-giizig Traditional Teaching Lodge (Blue Sky) is partnering with the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO) to host their first Dragonfly Symposium late spring 2007. The MNO will be conducting their national Annual General Assembly (AGA) which is a week-long event at Chippewa Park in Thunder Bay from July 9 to 13, 2007. Blue Sky has been invited to participate in MNO's AGA to conduct Blue Sky's new exciting dragonfly symposium which will be a day-long activity, on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 designated as one of MNO's cultural days (stay posted to MNO's website for more information and updates www.metisnation.org).The event will be an educational as well as cultural activity encouraging children; youth; families; and, Elders to come and learn about dragonflies along with other cultures and races that have strong affiliations to this winged-being. It is anticipated that botanists, biologists and scientists will provide their expertise together with Elders sharing legends and stories while having fun with the young, and the young at heart.
Part of the planning will involve a "juried show" inviting artisans to share examples of dragonflies in their arts or crafts i.e. paintings; quill baskets; painted grandfathers; etc. These will be displayed throughout the AGA week before and after the dragonfly symposium. Participants will be encouraged to "judge" these art displays.
The morning will start the festivities off with: registration; distributing of "odonata" kits to everyone who registers; a welcome to all the participants and the guests; followed by the instructional component of the day with the expected outcomes. All participants will hear similar messages such as "catch and release" and children will be taught and encouraged on how to "walk softly on the earth" by the Elders. Contests and prizes will add to the excitement throughout the day in addition to the fair at Chippewa Park.
The early afternoon will boast "field" adventures across the park areas; along the shore of Lake Superior; and, the marshy areas adjacent to Chippewa Park taking pictures of the many species and building a "speciment list". Maps will be available on the website prior to the event or at the registration table. "Under the tent" you will be able to view various adonata displays and collections along with the many vendors participating at MNO's AGA. You will be able to take advantage of authentic, genuine First Nation and Metis Nation crafts and cultural displays.
